SUSPIRIA

I'm sitting here listening to the soundtrack as I type. I hear the creepy twinkles kick in at the start, the guttural whispers that sing along almost mockingly, and I am back in the dark and troubled world of Suspiria. It is a delicious black forest gateau of witchcraft, sadistic death scenes, endless curtained corridors and a feeling of inescapability. It's a slow, dreamlike film made by the incredibly eccentric/borderline mysogynist Dario Argento, who once said: 

I like women, especially beautiful ones. If they have a good face and figure, I would much prefer to watch them being murdered than an ugly girl or man.

The plot revolves around a german ballet school and its unconventional means of keeping the teaching faculty working well into retirement. It's a messy script and badly acted. But every camera shot is an individual work of art, the death scenes orchestrated with such care that you have to respect the dedication Argento has to the craft of killing his subjects. The sadism I feel is more in line with Hitchcock's questionable moral fibre than the visceral extremes of video nasties.

The score by Goblin alone is enough to have you checking behind you at every turn. Other than Rosemary's Baby, I think it's my favourite horror soundtrack of all time. It lends itself perfectly to the supernatural, haunted feeling of the whole story. Delicate, like a ballet, but utterly malevolent with it.
